The public sewer system is dimensioned for medium rainwater volumes. During heavier rainfall events, the sewers fill up and a backwater occurs. This can rise to street level, the so-called backpressure level. If, during a heavy rainfall, more water flows into the sewage system than it can "swallow", a backpressure occurs.
In this case, the water from the main sewer below the street returns to the house through the house connection pipe. All rooms below the backpressure level are flooded by escaping water from toilets, sinks or drains in case there is no corresponding backwater protection.
